Safety with power leads and power plugs...

This was sent to me last week and is a good reminder for the festive season:

A Contract employee recently shared what can happen to an outlet and plug of a lead that has been maltreated and left in this condition over a long period.

The problem was first detected by a burning smell coming from behind the family fridge.

The electrical plug had been distorted by the back of the fridge being pushed hard up against it. This had led to the plug being twisted and not seated properly in the socket.

That is the plug had come out of the outlet to the point where the active pin was only just making contact which developed into a hot joint.

The level of risk the home was under became obvious when the plug was removed and the extent of the burning was noticed due to the hot joint.

It highlights the point that we should all periodically check our power points, leads and extension boards to ensure they are correctly installed and fit for duty.

Check that all appliances in the home to be in good working order and that installed in a correct manner.

When leaving for any extended period turn off all appliances that are non-essential at the outlet, as this is a safe condition to leave the home and also may save you some money on running costs.

The easy way to avoid this is to use one of these:

This allows the powerpoint to be recessed back inside the wall allowing for a nice flush installation with out the need to bend the power lead!

One of Australia's biggest extended warranty companies goes bust...

Hi guys,

Over the past few years some people have questioned my decision NOT TO SELL extended warranties on The Cable Connection's range of TV's, Amplifiers / HiFi etc - this is a perfect example of why I never recommend them:

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/warranty-providers-murky-past-revealed/story-e6frf7kx-1226419937685

From SMH:

THE man behind the busted United Warranties business - reported to be the largest extended warranty provider in Australia - has served time in prison, been disqualified from running a company by ASIC and registered a string of companies under different names and birth places.

An investigation by the Sunday Herald Sun has exposed United Warranties owner Werner "Vern" Rickman as a big-spending entrepreneur who was jailed in the mid-1990s for running a stolen vehicle chop shop and was fined by ASIC a few years later for managing a company while disqualified.

The paper has also learnt that a senior Myer manager who signed off on the United Warranties deal while at the department store went to work for the failed company in December on a reported salary of $350,000 before leaving after a few months.

The Sunday Herald Sun found Rickman in his home town of Archies Creek, but the embattled entrepreneur failed to break his silence despite ASIC now probing his business interests.

"I have been advised not to speak to the media until an announcement is made on Monday," he said.
Company and property searches show on April 16, as United Warranties struggled to stay afloat, the mortgages on several property titles in Archies Creek held by Rickman's wife, Deborah, were paid in full.

ASIC records show Rickman - who has registered companies as both Vern and Werner under the birthplace of Wonthaggi and Germany - has a stake in 12 companies, many carrying the United title.

In 1996 he spent nine months in jail for his role in a stolen truck and heavy-vehicle racket in which he received stolen trucks, semi-trailers and forklifts, stripped them for parts and sold them.

In 1999 Rickman pleaded guilty to serving as a director and manager of a company despite being banned by ASIC from doing so.

The paper understands he was born Werner Stadelbauer - a name his daughters, who are also associated with his business interests, carry. But he changed his name after a family dispute.

Tens of thousands of people with extended warranties on electrical goods bought at major retailers including Myer and Big W have been left in limbo following the apparent closure of the company.

A growing list of customers and sub-contractors are emerging claiming they are owed goods or money, while former employees say they are owned wages and entitlements.

How to: Connecting Speaker cable

At The Cable Connection we find that connecting a speaker to an amplifier or a wall plate is certainly one of the easiest parts of connecting a home theatre together yet it is also one of the areas most commonly connected incorrectly.

Connecting a speaker, using the correct polarity, provides a much richer home theatre / stereo experience allowing the speakers to stay in phase - ie. all drivers moving in and out at the same time.

The connection points on the back of most speakers and amplifiers are either binding posts

or spring clips.

These connections are most commonly marked with a red and black terminal.

The red side always indicated the positive (or active) terminal and the black is the negative (or neutral) terminal.

Sometimes these can be marked with a simple ‘+’ for positive and a ‘–‘ for negative rather than using a colour.

It is also possible to mark the black colour, or negative terminal, as white.  This is also acknowledged as an accepted negative colour.

Connecting a speaker is reasonably simple provided you use the following as a guide:

*Whichever lead you make the positive in the first instance, continue this pattern through the entire wire up*

What this means is that when you choose your cable make sure you use the stripe side (this could also be the writing or even a different wire colour) every time for the negative (industry standard) and the non marked side or red side for the positive.  By doing this it will make it very easy to make sure your speakers are wired in the correct phase.

Another way to connect a cable to a speaker or amplifier is by using a special terminal called a banana plug or speaker pin.

These plugs are colour coded in the same way as discussed previously (red for positive and black for negative) and help with easy and fast removal of speaker cable from speakers.

A 5.0 setup consists of 5 speakers.  The combination is laid out as below with a left and right front speaker, a centre channel speaker and a pair of rear speakers.
The wiring as described previously is shown in a more graphic format here:

You will note that each terminal colour matched the colour of the cable used (I.e. Red to red).  This makes identifying the cable much easier in an installation.

For more information on hooking up speakers correctly contact us at The Cable Connection on 1300 85 4441.

Online retailers increasing price of goods to cover postage...

I was having a bit of a read today of a few articles I found online and stumbled across this one:

http://www.news.com.au/money/cost-of-living/ship-wrecked-be-warned-of-the-hidden-costs-of-online-shopping/story-fnagkbpv-1226299228605

SHOPPERS are being warned not to be sucked in by offers of free shipping because your online "bargain" can actually end up more expensive than paying for the freight yourself.

This is true in a lot of cases.

If you are just purchasing 1 item it may be the case but when you start adding multiple items into your cart the "free shipping" is not so free any more!

The article makes a good point of that:

And while JB Hi-Fi is selling The Office season one DVD for $19.99 with free shipping, dvdwarehouse.com.au is selling the same item for $9.45, with freight charges of $6.90.

So in essence your free shipping actually cost $3.64.  (...and thats just on 1 item!)

Something to think about when shopping next time in your favourite online store.
